The first Q&A Session video is available now

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

みなさん、こんにちは!

The first Q&A session video is available now.

You can watch it on the Q&A Session page on the member's page.

What we did in the first session is

How to Pronounce

1)べんり(convenient)

2)れんらく(contact)

3)です, not れす

4)How to differentiate りゅ from る

2:10 How to Pronounce べんり

I made a one-minute Youtube video about it, but many people commented that it still sounded like "Bendy," so I’m explaining and showing the difference between べんり and Bendy.

To explain it, I'm showing you how my tongue and jaw move differently when I say ら and when I say だ.

I can say ら with my jaw open, but when I say だ, I have to close it at first to make the consonant sound [d], then open it to make the vowel sound, あ.

13:35 How to Pronounce れんらく

ん before ら is difficult to pronounce, right?

That ん is represented by the same mark as the English [n] sound, but in Japanese, the tongue position of ん before ら is the same as that of ら.

I'm comparing the tongue position of ん before ら to that of ん before だ.

And the tongue position of ん before だ is the same as that of だ.

Or, something opposite could happen(, which I didn’t mention in the video. Sorry!).

When I just say だ, the tip of my tongue touches the back of my front teeth, but when I say だ after ん, the tip of my tongue might not touch the back of my front teeth because my tongue position is a little more backward due to the ん before it.

Either way, when you say ん before だ or ら, your tongue touches the place you make the sound after it.

19:50 How to Pronounce です, not れす

When English speakers read Japanese sentences, sometimes their で sounds like れ.

I'm explaining why it happens, and how you can correct yourself.

(It's actually just being aware of it. Awareness will make your です sound just right.)

26:53 How to Differentiate between りゅ and る

I'm showing how your tongue moves from a book.

りゅ is r+い+ゆ

る is r +う

(BTW, the name of the book I'm showing in the video is 「音声を教える(https://amzn.to/3C2b9Zu)」. It's all written in Japanese, but it has a lot of illustrations of mouth, so if you read Japanese, this book is useful.)

Vocabulary

母音(ぼいん) vowel

子音(しいん) consonant

舌(した)、べろ(colloquial) tongue
